Dining room sizes

A dining room is habitable space, so the code minimum is the same as for a living room: at least 70 sq ft, no side shorter than 7 ft and a ceiling of at least 7 ft (IRC 2021). We found no public source for an average dining room size, so we show real sizes drawn to scale.

By the Squaremetry team · Updated · How we calculate

A dining room of 12 by 14 feet with a table for six, drawn to scale.

In short

  • Code minimum: 70 sq ft, no side under 7 ft (IRC R304).
  • Ceiling: at least 7 ft (IRC R305.1).
  • Average size: no public source yet, so we do not give one.

What the code and guidelines say

Code means the International Residential Code 2021 (IRC); local codes can be stricter. NKBA guidelines are recommendations, not law.
