A 120 sq ft + B 36 sq ft
L-shaped room
156 sq ft
Two rectangles: 10 × 12 ft is 120 sq ft and 6 × 6 ft is 36 sq ft. Together 156 sq ft.

Under ANSI Z765 only the part with a ceiling of at least 5 ft counts: here 96 of the 192 sq ft.
Explanation
How to calculate square footage
Measure the length and the width of the room in feet, then multiply the two. The result is the area in square feet.
Measured in feet and inches? Divide the inches by 12 first: 14 feet 6 inches is 14.5 feet.
For a listing or an appraisal in the US, ANSI Z765 measures from the outside walls, so that total is a little higher than the sum of the rooms.
Read the ANSI Z765 rules →Area = length × width · 14 ft × 12 ft = 168 sq ft
Three rooms, their length and width and the area of each, with the total.
| Room | Length | Width | Area (sq ft) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | 18′ 4″ | 13′ 2″ | 241 |
| Kitchen | 12′ 0″ | 10′ 6″ | 126 |
| Bedroom | 14′ 0″ | 11′ 6″ | 161 |
| Total | 528 |

info@squaremetry.comHow do I calculate the square footage of a room?
Measure the length and the width in feet and multiply them. A room of 14 by 12 feet is 168 square feet. For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles and add them up.
How do I convert inches to feet?
Divide the inches by 12 and add them to the feet. 14 feet 6 inches is 14.5 feet, and 11 feet 3 inches is 11.25 feet. You can also type 14' 6" and the calculator does it for you.
Does a closet count as square footage?
Yes. A closet is finished floor inside the home, so it counts. Measure it on its own and add it to the room, like the 6 by 2 foot closet in the example above.
How do I get the area in square meters?
Multiply the square feet by 0.0929. The calculator shows both: the area in square feet and, next to it, the same area in square meters.
Can I export the result as a floor plan?
Yes. Draw the room in the editor and export it as PNG, SVG or a PDF to scale, with the dimensions and the area on the plan.
