Square footage of a triangle

Multiply the base by the height and divide by 2. A triangle with a 12 ft base and a height of 10 ft is 12 × 10 ÷ 2 = 60 sq ft. The height is measured straight up from the base, at a right angle, not along the slanted side.

In short

Multiply the base by the height and divide by 2. A triangle with a 12 ft base and a height of 10 ft is 12 × 10 ÷ 2 = 60 sq ft. The height is measured straight up from the base, at a right angle, not along the slanted side.

The formula

base 12′ height 10′ 60 sq ft

Square feet = base × height ÷ 2, with the base and the height in feet. A triangle is half of the rectangle around it, which is why you divide by 2.

How to measure the height

  1. Pick one side as the base and measure it.
  2. Find the corner opposite the base.
  3. Measure from that corner straight to the base, at a right angle. In a room, a carpenter’s square or a laser helps.
  4. If the corner is right above one end of the base, the height is simply the other straight side.

A room with one angled wall

Split the room into a rectangle and a triangle. A room of 12 × 10 ft with a triangle on one side, 12 ft long and 4 ft deep, is 120 sq ft + 24 sq ft = 144 sq ft.

If you only know the three sides

Draw a line from the top straight down to the base and measure that, or use the three sides. A triangle with sides of 10, 10 and 12 ft has a height of 8 ft on the 12 ft side, so it is 12 × 8 ÷ 2 = 48 sq ft.

Questions

Questions

About square footage of a triangle. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

Why divide by 2?

Two copies of the same triangle make a rectangle of base × height. One triangle is half of that.

Can I use the slanted side as the height?

No. The height must be at a right angle to the base. The slanted side is always longer, so the area would come out too big.

What if I measure in inches?

Multiply base by height, divide by 2, then divide by 144 to get square feet. A 36 × 48 inch triangle is 864 square inches, or 6 sq ft.

How much does it cost?

The beta is free for 100 days, with up to 10 homes a month. After the beta: $5 per home for 30 days, or Pro for $19 a month or $149 a year, with 30 new homes a month.

Do I need an account?

No. You can draw and see every area without one; your plan stays in this browser. Sign in when you want to keep a home in your account or share it.

Can I export my floor plan?

Yes, as PNG, SVG or a PDF to scale, and as a square footage report with the rooms and the rule behind each number.

Does a garage count as square footage?

Not in the gross living area. A garage is not finished living space, so ANSI Z765 reports it separately, like a porch or a deck.

Can I measure in square meters?

Yes. Switch the units to meters and every length and area follows. Type 4.2 x 3.5 or 420 x 350 cm.
