Country house plans

A country house is a relaxed, rural style from the American South and Midwest: a gable roof, plain siding and porches you live on, front and back. Our two plans have 1,700 to 2,100 sq ft, each with a big kitchen at the back.

What counts

What counts in the square footage

Porches are the soul of a country house and add nothing to its square footage. The one story plan has 721 sq ft of covered porch on two sides, all of it outdoor space listed apart from the 1,700 sq ft inside.

Each room is measured inside its walls. The finished area of a house is measured to the outside of the exterior walls (ANSI Z765), so it is larger than the rooms added up.

Questions

Country house plans: questions

About these country house plans. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

Where can I find country house plans?

Right here: open either plan in the Squaremetry editor and change it to fit your lot. Plan books and local designers have many more; compare them by the finished area, measured the same way.

What makes a house a country house?

Practical rooms, a big kitchen, simple materials and covered porches. It is close to the farmhouse style, but usually smaller and with less emphasis on a barn look.

What is a southern house plan?

A country plan tuned to heat: deep porches for shade, a center hall that lets air through, high ceilings and windows on two sides of each room.

Can I change these plans?

Yes. Click Open in the editor under a plan and it opens as your own plan in the Squaremetry editor, with the same numbers as on this page. Move a wall and every area and the total update.

Is this a construction drawing?

No. This is an example floor plan, not a construction drawing. The Squaremetry team drew it for this page; it has no address. For a permit you need drawings from a qualified designer.
