Bedroom layouts with dimensions
Put the bed against a solid wall, out of the door swing, and keep a walkway on both sides and at the foot. In the four layouts below a queen bed has 18 in or more free beside it and up to 52 in at the foot. The code minimum for the room itself is 70 sq ft with no side under 7 ft (IRC R304).
Floor plan of a 12 × 12 ft bedroom: a queen bed against the wall opposite the window, two nightstands, an armoire and a desk.
Four bedroom layouts
Four common bedroom sizes, drawn by the editor with a queen bed (60 × 80 in). The table gives the floor inside the walls and the free space we measured in each drawing: beside the bed on both sides, and at the foot.

Where to put the bed
These are habits, not rules: there is no building code for the space around a bed. The code only sets the room: at least 70 sq ft with no side under 7 ft (IRC R304), and a ceiling of at least 7 ft (IRC R305.1, with exceptions for sloped ceilings).
On the longest solid wall, so you can reach it from both sides. A bed under a window works too, but the window must still open.
Out of the swing of the door, and not in the line from the door to the closet.
With a walkway on both sides. In a small guest room one side can go against the wall, which frees a wider path on the other.
With the dresser or armoire where its doors and drawers open into free floor, not against the bed.
A small bedroom layout
In our 10 × 10 ft bedroom the bed stands with its head against the side wall, 18 in free on each side, and leaves 40 in at the foot for the door and the window. The armoire sits beside the door, out of its swing.
A full or twin bed gives you more room again. In the editor, select the bed and set its width and depth, or pick a smaller bed in the library; the plan updates at once.
The 16 × 14 ft primary bedroom puts the bed between two windows, with 66 in on one side and 66 in on the other, and still has room for a desk, an armoire and a reading chair. That is 224 sq ft inside the walls.
How it works in the editor
1Open one of the bedrooms below, or draw your own room. Sizes are inside the walls.
2Turn on Interior and drag a bed, nightstands, a dresser or a desk from the library. Each piece has its real size and lands with its back to the wall.
3Select a piece to set its width and depth, rotate it 90°, put it back to the wall or swap it for something similar.
4Look at the room in 3D, then share the plan or export a PNG, PDF or DXF.
The bed on the longest solid wall, out of the door swing, with room to walk on both sides and at the foot. Storage goes where its doors open into free floor.
How much space should be around a bed?
There is no code rule for it. In our four drawings a queen bed has 18 in or more beside it where it is not against a wall; measure your own room and try it in the editor before you buy.
How do I lay out a small bedroom?
Put the bed in a corner or with one side against the wall, keep the door swing free and use the wall above the dresser. A smaller bed frees the most floor.
What is the minimum size of a bedroom?
Under the International Residential Code a habitable room needs at least 70 sq ft and no side under 7 ft (section R304). Your local code may add rules, such as an egress window.
How big should a primary bedroom be?
Big enough for the bed with a walkway on both sides plus storage. Our primary bedroom of 16 × 14 ft is 224 sq ft and also fits a desk and a chair.
