In short
- Code minimum: none, a closet is not habitable space (IRC R202).
- Standard depth: no public source yet, so we do not give one.
- Measure a closet as its own part of the room.
What the code and guidelines say
Code means the International Residential Code 2021 (IRC); local codes can be stricter. NKBA guidelines are recommendations, not law.
| What | Rule | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Floor area | no minimum | IRC 2021, a closet is not habitable space (R202) |
| Standard reach-in depth | No public source yet | only sellers of closet systems publish one |
| Walk-in closet size | No public source yet | we found no survey of closet sizes |
Minimum size by code
The International Residential Code defines habitable space as space for living, sleeping, eating or cooking, and names closets as not habitable (R202). The minimum area and width for rooms therefore do not apply to a closet.
The IRC also does not require a closet in a bedroom, although many buyers expect one.

Closet depth and walk-in sizes
The depths you find online come from companies that sell closet systems. We did not find a public, neutral source, so we show none. Measure your own clothes on a hanger and the space you need to reach them.
