Minimum size by code
The International Residential Code has no minimum area for a kitchen. Kitchens are named as the exception to the 70 sq ft and 7 ft rules for habitable rooms (R304.1 and R304.2). Every home does need a kitchen area, and every kitchen area needs a sink (R306.2).

Aisles and the work triangle
The National Kitchen & Bath Association recommends a work aisle of at least 42 in for one cook and at least 48 in for more cooks, measured between counters, tall cabinets or appliances. A walkway should be at least 36 in wide.
Between the sink, the cooktop and the refrigerator, the three distances together should be no more than 26 ft, with each leg between 4 and 9 ft. These are recommendations, not code.
