Square footage of a trapezoid

Add the two parallel sides, divide by 2 and multiply by the height between them. Sides of 14 ft and 8 ft that are 10 ft apart give (14 + 8) ÷ 2 × 10 = 110 sq ft.

Square footage of a trapezoid: in short

Add the two parallel sides, divide by 2 and multiply by the height between them. Sides of 14 ft and 8 ft that are 10 ft apart give (14 + 8) ÷ 2 × 10 = 110 sq ft.

The formula

a = 14′ b = 8′ h 10′ 110 sq ft

Square feet = (a + b) ÷ 2 × h. The two parallel sides are a and b; h is the distance between them, measured at a right angle. In effect you take the average width and multiply it by the depth.

Where you find trapezoids

A room with one slanted wall, a bay window seen from above, a patio that narrows toward the garden, or a lot that is wider at the street than at the back. Each is a trapezoid when two of its sides run parallel.

Measure the height, not the slanted side

The slanted sides are always longer than the height. Using one of them gives too large an area: in the example above a slanted side is 10.4 ft, and using it would add 4.8 sq ft that are not there.

Questions

Trapezoid area calculator: questions

About square footage of a trapezoid. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

Which sides are a and b?

The two sides that run parallel to each other. It does not matter which one you call a.

Can I use the length of the slanted side?

No. Use the height: the distance between the parallel sides at a right angle. The slanted side is longer, so the area would come out too big.

Is a trapezoid the same as a trapezium?

Yes, for this purpose. In the US the shape with one pair of parallel sides is a trapezoid; in British English it is often called a trapezium.

How much does it cost?

Drawing and every area are free, and your first home is free for 30 days. After that: $5 per home for 30 days, or Pro for $24 a month or $179 a year, with 15 new homes a month.

Do I need an account?

No. You can draw and see every area without one; your plan stays in this browser. Sign in when you want to keep a home in your account or share it.

Can I export my floor plan?

Yes, as PNG, SVG or a PDF to scale, and as a square footage report with the rooms and the rule behind each number. Free is a small PNG with a watermark; the full files come with an unlocked home or Pro, and your first home is free.

Does a garage count as square footage?

Not in the gross living area. A garage is not finished living space, so ANSI Z765 reports it separately, like a porch or a deck.

Can I measure in square meters?

Yes. Switch the units to meters and every length and area follows. Type 4.2 x 3.5 or 420 x 350 cm.
