A-frame house plans

An A-frame has a steep roof that comes down almost to the floor on both sides, so part of every upper floor sits under a low ceiling. Under ANSI Z765 floor area with less than 5 feet of headroom doesn’t count, and these plans show exactly how much does. See the a frame house plans below, drawn to scale and measured room by room.

What counts

What counts in the square footage

In the plan with a sleeping loft, 155 sq ft of the loft is lower than 5 ft and doesn’t count; the rest does, because more than half of it is 7 ft or higher. The ground floors stand on short side walls, so all of them counts.

Each room is measured inside its walls. The finished area of a house is measured to the outside of the exterior walls (ANSI Z765), so it is larger than the rooms added up.

Questions

A frame house plans: questions

About these a-frame house plans. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

What are the disadvantages of an A-frame house?

The sloped walls take away usable floor at the edges, furniture is harder to place, and upstairs only the middle has full headroom. Check what counts before you compare sizes.

Can I use these A-frame plans without paying?

You can open and change them for free; exporting a plan as a PDF, DXF or FML file costs $5 per home.

Can I change these plans?

Yes. Click Open in the editor under a plan and it opens as your own plan in the Squaremetry editor, with the same numbers as on this page. Move a wall and every area and the total update.

Is this a construction drawing?

No. This is an example floor plan, not a construction drawing. The Squaremetry team drew it for this page; it has no address. For a permit you need drawings from a qualified designer.
