Log home plans

A log home is built with walls of stacked logs, thicker than a framed wall, usually under a steep roof with a deep porch. Our two plans have 823 to 1,800 sq ft of finished space, from a two bedroom log cabin to a log home with a loft.

What counts

What counts in the square footage

Log walls here are 9 in thick, and ANSI Z765 measures to their outside face, so the walls are part of the total. In the log home the great room is open to the ridge: the 272 sq ft open to below doesn’t count upstairs, and neither do 250 sq ft under the low eaves.

Each room is measured inside its walls. The finished area of a house is measured to the outside of the exterior walls (ANSI Z765), so it is larger than the rooms added up.

Questions

Log home plans: questions

About these log home plans. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

What is the difference between a log cabin and a log home?

Mostly size and use. A log cabin is small and simple, often a getaway; a log home is a full-time house built the same way, with more bedrooms and often a loft.

Do thick log walls change the square footage?

Yes, a little. The area is measured to the outside of the walls, so thicker walls add to the total while the rooms inside stay the same. Compare the room areas, not only the total.

Can I change these plans?

Yes. Click Open in the editor under a plan and it opens as your own plan in the Squaremetry editor, with the same numbers as on this page. Move a wall and every area and the total update.

Is this a construction drawing?

No. This is an example floor plan, not a construction drawing. The Squaremetry team drew it for this page; it has no address. For a permit you need drawings from a qualified designer.
