Craftsman house plans

A Craftsman house is the American Arts and Crafts home of about 1905 to 1930: a low roof with wide eaves, exposed rafter tails, tapered porch columns and lots of built in wood. Our three plans have 1,800 to 2,400 sq ft on one or two floors.

What counts

What counts in the square footage

The front porch is the signature of a Craftsman and it is never floor area. On the two story plan it runs the full width and adds 316 sq ft outside the total. The den and the laundry are finished rooms, so they are in.

Each room is measured inside its walls. The finished area of a house is measured to the outside of the exterior walls (ANSI Z765), so it is larger than the rooms added up.

Questions

Craftsman house plans: questions

About these craftsman house plans. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

What makes a house a Craftsman home?

Honest materials and visible structure: wide eaves with brackets, a porch on thick tapered columns, windows with divided upper panes, and built in shelves, benches and cabinets inside.

What are the four types of Craftsman style homes?

People usually name the bungalow, the Prairie influenced Craftsman, the Mission style and the two story Foursquare. They share the porch, the wide roof and the woodwork; they differ in height and roof shape.

What are some ideas for a Craftsman style home?

Keep the porch deep enough to sit on, give the living room a fireplace with built in shelves on both sides, and put a den or office near the front door.

Can I change these plans?

Yes. Click Open in the editor under a plan and it opens as your own plan in the Squaremetry editor, with the same numbers as on this page. Move a wall and every area and the total update.

Is this a construction drawing?

No. This is an example floor plan, not a construction drawing. The Squaremetry team drew it for this page; it has no address. For a permit you need drawings from a qualified designer.
