Mountain house plans

A mountain house is made for a slope and a view: big windows toward the valley, a ski room or mudroom for gear, and often a lower level that walks out onto the hill. Our plans have 2,400 to 2,688 sq ft of finished space above grade.

What counts

What counts in the square footage

Two rules matter here. The walkout level is below grade, so 1,437 sq ft of it is listed apart even though it opens onto the hill. In the modern plan the great room is open to the roof, and the 313 sq ft of open space upstairs adds no floor area.

Each room is measured inside its walls. The finished area of a house is measured to the outside of the exterior walls (ANSI Z765), so it is larger than the rooms added up.

Questions

Mountain house plans: questions

About these mountain house plans. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

What house plan works on a sloped lot?

A walkout: the entry level sits at the top of the slope and a lower level opens onto the hill at the back. A split-level is another way to step a house down a slope.

Does a two-story great room count twice?

No. Its floor counts once. The open space above it on the upper floor is not floor area, so it is listed apart as open to below.

What makes a mountain house modern?

Simple shapes, a flat or single-slope roof, tall windows toward the view and open living areas, often finished with wood and stone outside.

Can I change these plans?

Yes. Click Open in the editor under a plan and it opens as your own plan in the Squaremetry editor, with the same numbers as on this page. Move a wall and every area and the total update.

Is this a construction drawing?

No. This is an example floor plan, not a construction drawing. The Squaremetry team drew it for this page; it has no address. For a permit you need drawings from a qualified designer.
