What counts

What counts in the square footage

For apartments the size inside the walls is the usual number. The split plan has 1,002 sq ft inside and 1,130 sq ft to the outer face of its walls; the gap is the walls themselves, including the thick ones to the neighbors and the hall.

Each room is measured inside its walls. The finished area of a house is measured to the outside of the exterior walls (ANSI Z765), so it is larger than the rooms added up.

What is a split bedroom apartment?

A layout with the bedrooms at opposite ends of the unit, usually each with its own bath. It suits roommates or a parent and an older child, because the bedrooms share no wall.

How big is a 2 bedroom apartment?

Many are between about 800 and 1,100 sq ft inside. Our plans have 888 and 1,002 sq ft; the split layout needs more, because it has two baths.

Can I change these plans?

Yes. Click Open in the editor under a plan and it opens as your own plan in the Squaremetry editor, with the same numbers as on this page. Move a wall and every area and the total update.

Is this a construction drawing?

No. This is an example floor plan, not a construction drawing. The Squaremetry team drew it for this page; it has no address. For a permit you need drawings from a qualified designer.
