Tile layout planner

A tile layout decides where the first tile goes, which way the rows run and which pattern you lay. Pick a start (a corner, the center or a point of your own), a direction and a pattern: straight, brick, diagonal or herringbone. The editor draws every joint at the real tile size and adds the extra for cuts that pattern needs.

  • Four patterns
  • Joints at the real size
  • Shower walls in bands

Drawing is free. A clean export costs $5 per home after the beta, or Pro from $19 a month.

Floor plan of an 8 × 6 ft bathroom drawn by the editor, with 6 × 24 in planks in a herringbone pattern from the center.

Brick or herringbone, drawn to scale

The same 8 × 6 ft bath, once with 12 × 24 in tiles in a brick pattern and once with 6 × 24 in planks in herringbone, both started in the center. Change the start or the direction and the joints move with it.

Brick pattern, 12 × 24 in, started in the center, drawn by the editor.

Extra for cuts per pattern

A pattern with more cuts needs more tile. The editor starts at 10% for straight tile and adds more for each pattern, up to 17% for herringbone. These are our own starting values; we found no public, neutral source. Ask your installer and change the number.

Shower walls in bands

On a wall you tile in bands: tile up to a height, paint above, or a second tile above the first. Each band has its own tile size, and the count takes doors and windows off.

Wall bands are drawn and counted as a straight grid. A brick (subway) or herringbone pattern on a wall is not there yet; plan the count with the bands and lay the pattern on site.

How many tiles to buy

This page is about where the tiles go. To count boxes from a room size, use the tile calculator: the area, your extra for cuts and the coverage on the box.

How it works in the editor

  1. Open the editor with an 8 × 6 ft bath ready, or draw your room. Turn on Interior.
  2. Choose the room and give the floor tiles under Material and amount, with your tile size.
  3. Under Tile plan, pick Straight, Brick, Herringbone or Diagonal, a Start (Corner, Centre or Point) and a Direction in degrees. The plan shows the joints at the real tile size.
  4. For a shower, choose a wall and set Tiles under Finish of this side: up to 4 bands, each up to a height with its own tile size. Doors and windows come off.
  5. Quantities and costs lists the floor tiles and the wall tiles per band, and they go in the CSV.

Questions

Questions

About tile layouts. Can’t find your answer? Send us a message.

Where should I start tiling a floor?

Often in the center, so the cut tiles at both walls are the same size; in a small room, sometimes along the most visible wall. In the editor you try Corner, Centre or a Point of your own and see the cuts before you buy.

How much extra tile do I need for herringbone?

The editor starts at 17% for herringbone against 10% for straight tile. These are our own starting values; ask your installer for your floor.

Can I plan subway tile on a shower wall?

You can tile the wall in bands with a 6 × 3 in tile and get the count per band. The brick pattern on the wall is not drawn yet: the bands show a straight grid.

How many tiles do I need for a shower?

Add up each wall up to the tile height, take off the door or window, and divide by the tile size, plus your extra for cuts. In the editor each wall band gives this count; the tile calculator works it out from a size.
